Do glaciers ever melt?
Yes, glaciers do melt, and in fact are melting all the time. As the snow on the glacier flows downhill into the warmer air at the end of the glacier, that snow melts. The end of the glacier is also known as the “snout” of the glacier.
What keeps glaciers from shrinking if they melt?
The only thing that keeps glaciers from shrinking is the fact that snow continues to fall and replenishes the top of the glacier, which also keeps it from shrinking. But, if the weather begins to get warmer, then the glacier will eventually shrink or even melt completely. This is happening a lot right now due to global warming.
