How do I find out the version of WordPress that I am currently running?
You may be having a difficult time determining the current version of WordPress that your website is running – for newer versions it seems that the administrator panel does not have the WordPress version number on the bottom of the page, and it doesn’t seem to be information that you can find in the administrator panel either. If that is true for you as well, luckily we have a couple of different ways for you to find out that information.
There are two easy ways of finding out which version of WordPress you are running. Here they are:
1. Go to a page on your website. Right click on the page and select “View Page Source” or “View Source” to see the HTML. Look for a tag that says “meta name=”generator” …”. Then look at the content attribute for that tag and you will see a WordPress version number. That is the version of WordPress that your website is running. Many WordPress users actually hide this tag because revealing this extra information can make it easier for hackers to get into your system since they may be targeting vulnerabilities that appear in a specific version of WordPress. You might want to consider hiding the generator tag that shows your WordPress version number – and you can find some plugins that do that for you if you search through Google.
2. Another way of finding the version of WordPress that you are running is by going to your wp-includes folder (through some sort of FTP editor), and then look for a file named “version.php”. Inside the version.php file you will see a version string that will tell you the version of WordPress that you are running.
