What is a hard stop?

In Corporate America, you will often hear the use of the phrase hard stop. If somebody has a hard stop it means that they have something scheduled immediately after the meeting that they currently are in.

Hard Stop Is Used In Meetings

Let’s say that Bob has a meeting from 3pm to 4pm. If Bob tells everyone in the meeting that he has a hard stop at 4pm it means that he absolutely can not stay at the meeting past 4pm, because he has something else scheduled at 4pm.

Here’s an example of it’s usage:

”Hard Stop” In a Sentence



Bob:  “I have a hard stop at 4pm.  So let’s please try to 
cover everything in this meeting before 4pm.  ”
